Vergina and the Royal Tombs of Aigai

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Archaeological Site Of Aigai (1996) The First Capital Of Macedon, With The Underground Museum Over The Tomb Of Philip II And The Restored Palace · Vergina, Central Macedonia

Vergina, a village in the foothills about 75 km south-west of Thessaloniki, stands on the site of Aigai, the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Macedon and the burial place of its kings. In 1977 the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos opened unlooted royal tombs under the Great Tumulus, including one widely identified as the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The tombs now sit inside an underground museum built within the rebuilt mound: dark, cool and quietly dramatic, with the painted tomb facades in place and a gold larnax stamped with the sixteen-ray star known as the Vergina Sun, a gold oak wreath, armour and tiny ivory portraits. Up the hill, the restored Palace of Aigai reopened in 2024, and below it lies the theatre where Philip II was assassinated in 336 BC. It suits history lovers, a Thessaloniki day trip and anyone curious about Alexander's world. The honest caveats: the museum is compact, photography has been banned inside, the palace means a hot uphill walk, and the identity of the man in the main tomb is still debated.
