Vermilion Cliffs National Monument
National Monument (Bureau Of Land Management) · Marble Canyon, Arizona
A remote Bureau of Land Management monument on the Arizona-Utah border protecting the Vermilion Cliffs, the Paria Plateau and some of the most extraordinary sandstone in the world — above all The Wave, a swirl of striped rock in Coyote Buttes North that can only be visited with a permit won by lottery. It also holds White Pocket, reached by deep sand, and the Paria Canyon wilderness. Since 1996 endangered California condors have been released from the cliffs, and they can be watched from a viewing site on House Rock Valley Road. There are no services, roads are rough dirt, and summer heat has killed hikers.
US Highway 89A and House Rock Valley Road, Marble Canyon, Arizona, 86036, United States
Open year-round. Permits are required for The Wave, Coyote Buttes South and overnight Paria Canyon trips (recreation.gov). Access roads may close after storms.
