Vermont Country Store

Historic Site · Weston, Vermont

A working general store on the main street of Weston, run by the same family since 1946, which sells the things that stopped being sold - flannel nightgowns, horehound drops, Lanolin soap, tinned brown bread, the sweets and remedies and household objects that fell out of the catalogues everywhere else. The mail-order catalogue that preceded it, founded in 1945, is credited as the first country-store catalogue in the United States, and it is why a shop in a Vermont village of a few hundred people is a name people recognise in states they have never left. Coaches stop at Weston for this and nothing else.

657 Main Street, Weston, Vermont, 05161, United States

FREE to enter, open YEAR ROUND and seven days a week, which makes it one of very few dependable stops in southern Vermont in mud season and deep winter. Hours shorten in winter and around holidays - check before a long drive. Free parking on site. ⚠ THE FIRST HALF OF OCTOBER AND THE WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS ARE GENUINELY CROWDED, with the car park full and coaches arriving unannounced; weekday mornings are the answer in any season. ⚠ A SECOND, LARGER AND MUCH QUIETER STORE AT ROCKINGHAM ON ROUTE 103 stocks more, has wider aisles and is about thirty minutes away - most visitors do not know it exists. The free sample counter is extensive. Budget an hour rather than fifteen minutes; the stock is labelled throughout and reading the shelves is the visit.
