Vermont Granite Museum

Specialty Museum · Barre, Vermont

A museum of the granite industry inside a turn-of-the-century granite manufacturing plant at Barre - the Jones Brothers works, a long shed built to cut and carve stone, now holding exhibits about the trade that made the town and drew Scottish, Italian and Spanish carvers to a corner of Vermont. Barre granite is in the Vermont State House, in monuments across the country and in a great many cemeteries; the quarries above the town are among the deepest in the world. Since the Rock of Ages quarry closed its visitor operation in 2025 this is the main place left to understand any of that, and its tour-bus bookings have gone up accordingly.

⚠ PHONE 802-476-4605 BEFORE TRAVELLING - the published schedule is not consistent. One source gives TUESDAY TO SATURDAY, 10am to 4pm, closed Sunday and Monday; another describes the museum as OPEN FOR TOURS BETWEEN JUNE AND OCTOBER, OR BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT AT OTHER TIMES. Rather than guess, ring first. A modest per-person admission; free parking on site. GUIDED TOURS are available and strongly worth taking, because stone-cutting machinery does not explain itself and the story is the carvers rather than the equipment. GROUP, SCHOOL AND BUS TOURS are welcomed and arranged in advance - ⚠ COACH PARTIES ARE NOW FREQUENT, because after the ROCK OF AGES QUARRY ENDED ALL PUBLIC ACCESS IN FEBRUARY 2025 this museum absorbed that traffic, with bus bookings rising from about five a year to over a hundred. ⚠ IT IS AN OLD GRANITE PLANT AND IS COOL INSIDE IN COLD WEATHER - dress accordingly. HOPE CEMETERY in Barre, full of the carvers' own memorials, is nearby and free.
