Vermont History Museum

History Museum · Montpelier, Vermont

The Vermont Historical Society's museum, in the Pavilion Building on State Street in Montpelier - two doors from the State House and built to look like the Victorian hotel that stood on the site. Inside is a walk through Vermont from the Abenaki and the Revolution to the twentieth century, told in a multimedia exhibit rather than a hall of cases: a catamount, a railway carriage, a 1920s general store, the objects of a small state that spent a long time arguing about its own independence. It is a modest museum and it is the best single explanation of the state you can get in ninety minutes.

109 State Street, Montpelier, Vermont, 05602, United States

Open TUESDAY TO SATURDAY, generally 10am to 4pm, YEAR ROUND, with a modest per-person admission. ⚠ CLOSED SUNDAYS, MONDAYS AND STATE AND FEDERAL HOLIDAYS - which catches weekend visitors constantly, particularly those who have just come from the State House next door on its own different schedule. Phone 802-828-2291 to confirm before travelling. Metered street parking and small lots nearby, rarely difficult in a city of eight thousand. School and group visits are arranged in advance; the Vermont Historical Society library operates separately with its own hours. ⚠ THE VERMONT STATE HOUSE IS 139 METRES AWAY ALONG STATE STREET AND IS ENTIRELY FREE - the two are the obvious pairing and together are the best two hours in Montpelier, but they keep different schedules so check both. ⚠ COME BETWEEN JANUARY AND MID-MAY and the legislature will be sitting two doors away.
