Vermont Route 100
Scenic Highway · Rochester, Vermont
Two hundred and sixteen miles of two-lane road running almost the entire length of Vermont down the spine of the Green Mountains, from the Massachusetts line to the Canadian border. It is a designated Scenic Byway and it is called Vermont's Main Street and the Skier's Highway with roughly equal justification - almost every ski area in the state hangs off it, and so do most of the villages, general stores and covered bridges people picture when they picture Vermont. In the first half of October it carries a large share of New England's foliage traffic, and there is a reason for that.
100 Vermont Route 100 North, Rochester, Vermont, 05767, United States
Open at all times and FREE - a public state highway with no tolls anywhere on its 216 miles, maintained and ploughed year round. ⚠ THE FIRST HALF OF OCTOBER IS FOLIAGE SEASON and this two-lane road carries a large share of New England's leaf traffic; add half again to any driving estimate and book beds months ahead. Frost heaves make some sections genuinely rough in March and April. ⚠ INDIVIDUAL ATTRACTIONS ALONG THE ROAD KEEP THEIR OWN AND OFTEN SEASONAL HOURS - Ben & Jerry's, the Vermont Country Store, the Coolidge homestead and the ski areas are all separate operations with separate seasons, and several close or reduce in mud season from April into early June. Fuel in the larger towns; the gaps in the middle sections are longer than they look.
