Vesteralen and the Andenes Whale Safaris

Archipelago North Of Lofoten; Andenes Sits Close To The Bleiksdjupet Undersea Canyon, Where Sperm Whales Feed Close To Shore · Andenes, Nordland

Vesteralen is the archipelago directly north of Lofoten, a chain of big, mountainous islands - Andoya, Langoya, Hadseloya and part of Hinnoya - with long white beaches, peat moors, fishing villages and far fewer visitors than its famous neighbour. At its northern tip lies Andenes, one of the few places in the world where sperm whales can be seen fairly reliably from a boat on a short trip: just offshore the continental shelf drops into the Bleiksdjupet undersea canyon, reaching depths of roughly 1,000 m within a short sail of the harbour, and male sperm whales feed there on squid for much of the year. Whale safaris have run from Andenes for decades, and the town adds puffin trips to the bird island Bleiksoya, the white sand of Bleik, the Andoya National Tourist Route and the Andoya Space visitor centre. A major new whale centre, The Whale, is being built and is due to open in June 2027. The honest caveat: this is the open Norwegian Sea - trips are cancelled in wind, seasickness is common, sightings are likely but never promised, and Andenes is a long way from anywhere.

Open all year, with no gates or entry fees for the islands. Sperm whale safaris run much of the year; the main season is roughly late May to mid September, with daily departures, while winter trips (roughly November to February - confirm) look for orcas and humpbacks only when the herring comes close, which changes from year to year. Puffin boat trips to Bleiksoya run roughly late May to mid August. Book whale trips a few days ahead in July. Reach Andenes by Wideroe flight to Andoya airport, by road from Harstad/Narvik airport at Evenes (roughly 3 hours), or by the summer car ferry from Gryllefjord on Senja - confirm its season. The Whale does not open until 4 June 2027.
