Viborg Cathedral
Twin Towered Granite Cathedral In One Of Denmark'S Oldest Towns, Rebuilt In The 19th Century And Painted Inside By Joakim Skovgaard, Above The Old Town And Lakes Of Viborg · Viborg, Central Denmark Region
Viborg Cathedral (Viborg Domkirke) is the twin-towered granite church that crowns one of Denmark's oldest towns, standing on the hilltop above the old streets and the two Viborg lakes in central Jutland. A church has stood here since the 12th century, when Viborg was a bishop's seat and the place where Danish kings were acclaimed at the regional assembly. The medieval building burned more than once and was so decayed by the mid-1800s that it was largely taken down and rebuilt in a Romanesque style between roughly the 1860s and 1870s; only the crypt is said to survive from the original church. What makes it worth the trip is the interior: between roughly 1901 and 1913 the painter Joakim Skovgaard and his assistants covered the walls and vaults with frescoes telling the Bible story from Creation to the Last Judgement, one of the largest painted church interiors in Scandinavia. The Skovgaard Museum across the square shows his sketches. The honest caveat: the exterior is 19th-century, not medieval, and Viborg is roughly three and a half hours from Copenhagen.
