Vicksburg National Military Park
National Military Park · Vicksburg, Mississippi
The ground of the forty-seven-day siege that ended on 4 July 1863, when Pemberton surrendered the city and the Union took the Mississippi River. Lincoln wrote that the Father of Waters again went unvexed to the sea; the Confederacy was cut in two and never recovered. Sixteen miles of tour road run over reconstructed siege lines through roughly thirteen hundred monuments, and in a building near the national cemetery stands the USS Cairo — an ironclad gunboat sunk by a Confederate mine in 1862, raised from the Yazoo River in 1964, and one of a handful of Civil War warships that survive at all.
3201 Clay Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi, 39183, United States
Park and tour road open daily, generally 8 AM to 5 PM, with a per-vehicle entrance fee valid seven days. Visitor centre and the USS Cairo Museum keep the same daytime hours; the Cairo gunboat shelter closes earlier than the park in winter. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
