Victoria-by-the-Sea is a very small seaside village on the south shore of Prince Edward Island, about 35 km west of Charlottetown, which has its own listing. It began as a fishing and shipbuilding community and still has quiet streets of heritage houses, a wharf, a lighthouse, craft studios and a summer theatre. The Confederation Trail, the old railway bed turned into a walking and cycling path, runs through the village. This is a place for slow people: a couple of hours of strolling, a coffee, a browse through a studio and a look at the tidal flats at the end of the lane. It is not a sight with a single big attraction, and a visitor who wants a list of things to tick off will be done in an hour. Much of it is seasonal, with shops and eateries open from late spring to early autumn and mostly shut in winter. It suits couples, cyclists and anyone who likes small-town charm. Parking is easy in season, the village is flat and the whole centre can be walked in under an hour.

Small seaside village on the south shore of Prince Edward Island between Charlottetown and Summerside, with a lighthouse, a wharf, a theatre, craft shops and a tidal-flat beach, Victoria, Prince Edward Island, Canada

There is no gate and no single opening time. The streets, the wharf and the shore are open all year, but the village only really works from late spring to early autumn, when the craft shops, galleries, cafes and the summer theatre are open. Many businesses keep short days, often late morning to late afternoon, and some close on one or two weekdays, so confirm each place before you plan around it. Theatre performances are in the evening in the summer season; check the current schedule and book ahead for popular dates. From late October to May, most shops and eateries are closed and the village is very quiet, though a walk along the shore is still pleasant on a clear day.
