Villa Barbaro at Maser
UNESCO World Heritage Site (City Of Vicenza And The Palladian Villas Of The Veneto, Inscribed 1994 And Extended 1996), A Palladio Villa Of The 1550s Frescoed Throughout By Veronese · Maser, Veneto
This is the one Palladian villa where the architecture and the painting were done at the same time by the two men at the top of their trades, and it is still standing in the countryside with nothing built around it. Palladio designed the house for two brothers in the 1550s, a long low front with a temple portico in the middle and arcaded wings running out to dovecotes at each end. Inside, Veronese frescoed almost every room: painted doors that open onto nothing, a huntsman stepping in from a painted doorway, a woman leaning over a balcony that does not exist, and the owner's family looking down from an upper gallery. Nothing in Italy does the trompe-l'oeil joke better or earlier. Behind the house is a nymphaeum fed by a spring, and across the road a small round temple Palladio built at the very end of his life. The place is privately owned, still lived in, and open only on a handful of days a week.
