Villa La Angostura
Lakeside Resort Village On The North Shore Of Lago Nahuel Huapi, Gateway To The Arrayanes Forest And The Southern End Of The Seven Lakes Route · Villa La Angostura, Neuquen
Villa La Angostura is a village of timber and stone houses spread through the forest on the northern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, about an hour from Bariloche and a much calmer, more upmarket place to stay. Its name comes from the narrow isthmus that joins the Quetrihue peninsula to the shore, and the peninsula holds the village's famous sight: the Bosque de Arrayanes, a grove of arrayan trees with cinnamon-coloured, cold-to-the-touch bark, reached by a twelve-kilometre trail or by boat across the lake. Around the village are lake beaches, the tiny Rio Correntoso, said to be among the shortest rivers in the world, forest walks to waterfalls, and the Cerro Bayo ski area, small but with a lake view from every run. It is the southern end of the Seven Lakes Route and the last Argentine town before the border crossing to Chile at Cardenal Samore. In 2011 ash from the Puyehue volcano buried the village under several centimetres of grey dust; it recovered, and that risk is part of living here. Summer and ski season are both busy.
