Village Creek State Park
Arkansas State Park On Crowley'S Ridge, One Of The Largest State Parks In Arkansas At Around 7,000 Acres. Preserves A Surviving Sunken Trace Of The Old Military Road, A Route Of The Trail Of Tears. · Wynne, Arkansas
Village Creek covers about seven thousand acres of Crowley's Ridge, the narrow loess spine that runs down eastern Arkansas standing two hundred feet above a Delta that is flat in every direction. The ridge grows oak, hickory, beech and tulip poplar - Appalachian trees in the middle of cotton country - and the park is the best place to walk in them. Its most significant feature is easy to miss: a surviving sunken trace of the Old Military Road, worn several feet below the surrounding ground by wagons and by the forced removal of Cherokee people along the Trail of Tears. There are two lakes, a long trail network, cabins and a campground, and it is the anchor of the Crowley's Ridge Parkway.
