Villahermosa and La Venta

Parque Museo / ColeccióN Olmeca · Villahermosa, Tabasco

The Olmec were Mesoamerica's first great civilisation and Tabasco was their heartland. In the 1950s the site of La Venta was threatened by oil development, and the poet Carlos Pellicer had its monuments moved about 130 kilometres to Villahermosa and set along a jungle trail in a city park. That is what you visit: not the ruin itself but a rescue, with three colossal basalt heads, altars and stelae among trees and regional animals in enclosures between them. The park is not the original site, and visitors routinely think it is. Around it lie cacao country, where chocolate begins, and Comalcalco, the only major Maya city built of fired brick. Villahermosa is hot, humid and an oil city, not a colonial one. Expect MXN 60-100 (roughly USD 3-6) for the park, MXN 75-100 for Comalcalco, and a full day for the park and museum plus a second for Comalcalco and a cacao hacienda. November to March is least punishing.

Parque-Museo La Venta, Av. Ruiz Cortines, Villahermosa, Tabasco, 86000, Mexico

⚠ THE PARQUE-MUSEO LA VENTA IS NOT THE LA VENTA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - the monuments were moved 130 km here in the 1950s to save them from oil development, and the original site is west of the city and largely empty. The park keeps daytime hours with paid admission and generally closes Mondays. ⚠ IT IS AN OUTDOOR JUNGLE TRAIL OF ABOUT A KILOMETRE with live jaguars, crocodiles and monkeys in enclosures between the monuments. ⚠ GO AT OPENING: Tabasco's heat and humidity are relentless by mid-morning. Comalcalco keeps INAH daytime hours; INAH Sunday free admission applies to Mexican nationals and residents only. Cacao hacienda tours generally need booking. ⚠ VILLAHERMOSA HAS FLOODED CATASTROPHICALLY - most of the city was underwater in 2007 and it flooded badly again in 2020; check conditions in the wet season, June to October. ⚠ TABASCO CARRIES A TRAVEL ADVISORY - check current advice and do not travel highways after dark. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
