Virgen de la Paz Monument

A Monumental Statue Completed In 1983, Among The Tallest Statues In The Americas At Roughly 46 Metres Including Its Pedestal, Standing On A Hilltop Above Trujillo City With An Internal Viewing Platform Reached By Lift; A Genuine Regional Pilgrimage And Panoramic Viewpoint Destination · Trujillo, Trujillo

A monumental statue of the Virgin Mary stands on a hilltop above Trujillo city, completed in 1983 and rising to roughly forty-six metres including its pedestal, among the tallest statues anywhere in the Americas. An internal lift carries visitors up through the statue's interior to a viewing platform near the top, from which the whole Trujillo valley and the surrounding Andes foothills spread out below. The monument draws both religious pilgrims and general visitors, and the climb inside a statue this size is itself an unusual experience regardless of why you have come. Trujillo city below is a modest Andean town, and the monument above it is unambiguously the reason most visitors make the trip, a single, nameable landmark that works as a day trip from Merida or a stop on a longer Andean road route. The sheer scale of it is hard to judge in a photograph and far more striking in person, standing beside or inside the statue itself.

On a hilltop above Trujillo city in the Venezuelan Andes foothills, reached by road or cable car from the city centre, Trujillo, Trujillo, Venezuela

The monument grounds are open through daylight hours with a modest entry fee. The internal lift to the viewing platform operates on a set schedule and has had periods of maintenance closure; confirm current operating status before planning a visit specifically around going inside, since the exterior and grounds remain worthwhile even if the lift is not running on a given day. Trujillo city below keeps ordinary daytime hours for its own plazas and shops. The monument is reached by a short drive or taxi from the city centre.
