Virginia City Historic District
National Historic Landmark District The Comstock Lode Mining Town, One Of The Largest NHL Districts In The United States · Virginia City, Nevada
Virginia City is the mining town that grew on top of the Comstock Lode, the rich silver and gold deposit struck on the slopes of Mount Davidson in 1859, and its historic district is one of the largest National Historic Landmark districts in the United States. In the 1860s and 1870s the Comstock mines produced fortunes that helped build San Francisco, and the town grew into a busy city with mansions, churches, an opera house, dozens of saloons and a newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise, where a young Samuel Clemens first signed his work Mark Twain. After the Great Fire of 1875 much of the town was rebuilt within a few years, and most of what stands today dates from that rebuilding. C Street is now a strip of wooden boardwalks, old saloons, candy and souvenir shops and small museums, while the steep side streets hold the Fourth Ward School, St Mary in the Mountains, Piper's Opera House, mansions, mine tours and a steam railroad. The town sits at about 6,200 feet, roughly 40 minutes from Reno, and it is part living community, part tourist attraction.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the town and C Street are always open, shops and cafes run roughly 10 am to 5 pm, and saloons open late morning and stay open into the night. The Fourth Ward School, mine tours, mansion tours and the V and T railroad are seasonal, usually late spring to autumn, often daily in summer and weekends only or closed in winter; each sets its own days and last tour times. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a winter weekday when most attractions are shut, reaching the train after the last run of the day, finding kitchens closed by late afternoon, the Geiger Grade closed or icy after snow, and event weekends filling every parking space. Confirm current times before relying on them.
