Virginia State Capitol

Historic Site · Richmond, Virginia

Thomas Jefferson designed it while he was minister to France, working from the Maison Carree at Nimes — the first monumental building in the New World in the Roman revival style, and the reason a great deal of American public architecture looks the way it does. It was finished in 1788 and still houses the Virginia General Assembly, which has met continuously since 1619 and is the oldest law-making body in the Western Hemisphere. Tours are free.

1000 Bank Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23219, United States

Generally open Monday to Saturday with shorter Sunday hours; free guided tours roughly hourly. Access is restricted and routes change when the General Assembly is in session, roughly January to March. Security screening and photo ID required.
