Visby

UNESCO World Heritage Site (1995): The Hanseatic Town Of Visby, The Best Preserved Fortified Trading Town In Northern Europe, With A Medieval Wall Of About 3.4 Km And The Ruins Of A Dozen Churches · Visby, Gotland County

Visby is the main town of Gotland, Sweden's largest island, and the best-preserved walled trading town in northern Europe. In the Middle Ages it was a rich Hanseatic port on the Baltic trade routes, and it still sits inside its Ringmur, a stone wall of about 3.4 km with dozens of towers, most of it standing. Inside are steep cobbled lanes, stone merchant houses, rose-covered cottages and the roofless ruins of about a dozen medieval churches, while St Mary's Cathedral is the one medieval church still in use. UNESCO listed the town in 1995. People come for the walls at sunset, the ruins, the Gotland Museum, summer evenings on the squares and as a base for the island's beaches, sea stacks and cycle routes. Two weeks shape its calendar: Almedalen Week, the political week around late June and early July, and Medieval Week in early August, when rooms and ferries sell out. The honest caveat: outside summer Visby is very quiet, many restaurants and shops close, and the cobblestones are hard work for tired feet, wheels and heels.

The town, its wall and the church ruins in the open air can be seen at any hour all year. The Gotland Museum and St Mary's Cathedral keep their longest hours from about Midsummer to mid August, with shorter hours and some closed days, often Mondays for the museum, the rest of the year - check the current schedule. Many restaurants, shops and the ruin concerts run only in the summer season. Getting there: Destination Gotland ferries sail from Nynashamn, about an hour south of Stockholm by commuter train, and from Oskarshamn, each crossing roughly 3 hours - confirm the current timetable. Flights from Stockholm take under an hour. Book ferry space, especially for a car, weeks ahead in normal summer weeks and months ahead for Midsummer, Almedalen Week and Medieval Week, when rooms also sell out early.
