Voelklingen Ironworks

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Voelklingen Ironworks (1994), The First Industrial Monument Inscribed Anywhere; A Complete Ironworks Shut In 1986 And Left Standing, With Its Blast Furnaces, Ore Shed And Sintering Plant Walkable · Voelklingen, Saarland

The Voelklinger Huette in the Saar valley west of Saarbruecken is a complete ironworks that stopped making iron in 1986 and was then left standing instead of being cleared. In 1994 it became the first industrial monument anywhere inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and that is the reason to come: not a tidy museum of polished machines but six blast furnaces, a long ore shed, the sintering plant, the blowing-engine hall and kilometres of pipework, with walkways threaded through them and a platform high on the furnace group. Part of the site has gone back to nature - the Paradise, a self-seeded wilderness of birch and buddleia growing out of the slag. Indoors there is a science centre built around iron and fire for children, and a vast hall used for touring exhibitions, which is the wet-weather half of a visit. It is rusting, enormous and more atmospheric than pretty. It suits anyone interested in industry, architecture or photography, and it is a poor choice in heavy rain, when most of the route is open sky.

Rathausstrasse 75-79, Voelklingen, in the Saar valley west of Saarbruecken, Voelklingen, Saarland, Germany

Open daily all year, including Mondays, which is unusual for a German monument; typical hours are late morning to early evening in summer and a shorter afternoon in winter, with last admission about an hour before closing - confirm. Normally closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 January. The outdoor blast furnace walkways and the high platform are closed in storms, high winds, ice and thunder, sometimes at short notice, while the indoor exhibition halls stay open. Touring exhibitions run to their own dates and the site stays open between them, though with less to see indoors - confirm what is showing before you travel. Evening events and concerts in the blowing-engine hall are ticketed separately.
