Voergaard Castle

Moated Renaissance Castle In Vendsyssel With A Large Art And Furniture Collection, Open On Guided Tours In Season · Dronninglund, North Denmark Region

Voergaard Castle is a moated Renaissance castle in the farmland of east Vendsyssel in north Jutland, between Dronninglund and Saeby, roughly 35-40 minutes by car from Aalborg. Its main wing is said to have been built in the late 16th century for the noblewoman Ingeborg Skeel, and it keeps the look of that age: red brick, stepped gables, a fine sandstone gateway and water on every side. In the 20th century the estate passed to a count who filled it with art and furniture and left it to a foundation, which now shows the rooms. The collection is said to include old-master paintings, with works attributed to famous names, as well as French furniture and porcelain - treat attributions with care. Visits are mainly by guided tour in season. People come for an intimate castle and a surprising collection in a quiet corner of the country. The honest caveat: it is seasonal, hard to reach without a car, tour times are fixed, and it is a modest detour, not a major royal palace.
