Volcan Lanin and Lanin National Park

A 3,747 Metre Stratovolcano On The Chile Border, The Symbol Of Neuquen, Inside Lanin National Park (Created 1937), With Araucaria Forests And Mapuche Co Management · Junin de los Andes, Neuquen

Volcan Lanin is a near-perfect snow cone standing alone on the border with Chile at 3,747 metres, and its outline, visible from far across northern Patagonia, is the emblem of Neuquen province. It is the centrepiece of Lanin National Park, which stretches north and south of it along a chain of long glacial lakes, Huechulafquen, Paimun, Tromen and Lolog, and protects the forests of pehuen, the monkey-puzzle araucaria, a tree sacred to the Mapuche communities who live in and help manage the park. Many visitors see the volcano from the shores of Huechulafquen or from the road to the Mamuil Malal pass into Chile, and come for the fishing, which is among the best in Patagonia. Climbers come for the summit, a non-technical but serious two or three-day ascent on snow and ice with crampons, which rangers only permit after checking equipment and experience at the Tromen station; people die on it when they underestimate it. The towns of Junin de los Andes, a fly-fishing centre, and San Martin de los Andes are the bases.

The park is open all year. Summit climbs are allowed mainly in the summer season, roughly November to April, and only after registering with rangers at the Tromen pass, where equipment and experience are checked. Weather closes the mountain often. Lake campsites are mostly summer only.
