Volubilis

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Archaeological Site Of Volubilis (1997), The Best Preserved Roman City In Morocco And Once A Capital Of The Province Of Mauretania Tingitana, Known For Its In Situ Floor Mosaics · Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Fes-Meknes

Volubilis is the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco, a walled town of roughly 40 hectares on an open hillside below Jebel Zerhoun, about 30 km north of Meknes. It grew rich on olive oil, and that is the real story of the place: among the temples and the arch stand dozens of stone oil presses, the industrial plant of a working farm town at the southern edge of the empire. What makes it worth the detour is the mosaics, which are still in the floors they were laid in rather than lifted into a gallery, so you walk the rooms of the houses and look down at Orpheus, Hercules and Dionysus where their owners did. The Capitol, the basilica and the forum stand at the centre, the arch of Caracalla at the head of the main street, and storks nest on the re-erected columns. Honest caveats: there is almost no shade and the hill is fully exposed, so a summer midday is punishing; the mosaics are open to the weather and visibly fading; the famous bronzes found here are in Rabat, not on site; and the guides at the gate vary enormously.

Archaeological site on the lower slopes of Jebel Zerhoun, about 30 km north of Meknes and 4 km from Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Fes-Meknes, Morocco

Volubilis is an open archaeological site and keeps daylight hours, broadly 8:30 or 9:00 until sunset - around 17:30 in winter and as late as 19:00 in high summer - every day of the year, with a visitor centre and site museum at the entrance that keep slightly shorter hours. Tickets are sold at the gate only and nothing needs booking ahead. Official guides wait inside the entrance and are hired there for an agreed hour or two, which is worth doing because very little on the hill is labelled. Getting there: no bus runs to the gate, so most visitors come by hired car or by grand taxi from Meknes, roughly 40 minutes, with waiting time negotiated before you set off; Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is about 4 km away and the two are normally seen together. Confirm current hours and prices locally, and expect shorter museum and cafe hours during Ramadan.
