Vordingborg Goose Tower and the Danish Castle Centre

Ruins Of The Valdemar Kings' Great Medieval Castle, With The Goose Tower, Denmark'S Best Preserved Medieval Castle Tower, And The Danish Castle Centre Museum · Vordingborg, Region Zealand

Vordingborg, on the south coast of Zealand roughly an hour and a quarter from Copenhagen by train, was for about two centuries one of the most important royal castles in Denmark. Valdemar the Great began a fortress here in the 1160s to guard the waters against Wendish raiders, and later kings, above all Valdemar IV Atterdag in the 14th century, made it a vast walled stronghold. Today most of it is grassy ramparts, foundations and wall fragments in a large free ruin park, but one piece survives almost whole: the Goose Tower, often called Denmark's best-preserved medieval castle tower, topped by a golden goose that is said to mock the Hanseatic League. Beside it, the Danish Castle Centre (Danmarks Borgcenter), partly built into the ruin, tells the story of medieval Danish castles, kings and wars with digital guides and finds. People come for the tower climb and view over the Smalandsfarvandet waters, for the Valdemar story and as a stop on the way to Mon. The honest caveat: this is a ruin, not a furnished palace, and outside the tower and museum there is more grass than stone.

The ruin park is open-air and free, and can usually be walked at any reasonable hour all year. The Danish Castle Centre museum and the Goose Tower climb are paid and share opening hours: typically daily in summer and shorter days off season, often closed on Mondays from autumn to spring - check the current schedule, and note that the tower may close in storms, ice or for maintenance. By train from Copenhagen take a regional or intercity train towards Nykobing Falster to Vordingborg, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, then walk about 15-20 minutes through the town. By car it is roughly 100 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes on the E47/E55. No booking is needed for individuals; groups and guided tours book ahead.
