Vulcan Park and Museum
National Historic Landmark · Birmingham, Alabama
A fifty-six-foot cast iron Roman god of the forge standing on a stone pedestal on top of Red Mountain, looking down over Birmingham with a spear point raised in one hand and a bare backside pointed at the suburb of Homewood. He is the largest cast iron statue in the world, made from local iron for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis to advertise what Birmingham could produce, and he has been up here since 1939. An observation balcony runs round the top of the pedestal and the view is the best in the city.
