Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge
National Wildlife Refuge · Georgetown, South Carolina
Bottomland hardwood and blackwater river along the Waccamaw and the Great Pee Dee near Conway and Georgetown, established in December 1997 and held in scattered tracts rather than one block. It is a paddling refuge before it is a walking one, and one of the more reliable places on the Carolina coast to see a swallow-tailed kite. A large share of its trail network is currently closed, so the map promises considerably more than the ground delivers.
