Wachusett Mountain

Massachusetts State Reservation · Princeton, Massachusetts

A two-thousand-foot monadnock rising out of central Massachusetts farmland at Princeton, and the highest point in the state east of the Connecticut River. A state reservation covers the mountain and a ski area occupies its northern face, so it is both a serious conservation site — with one of the largest stands of old-growth forest in southern New England on its upper slopes — and the closest real skiing to Boston. In September it is one of the best hawk-watching sites in the Northeast.

345 Mountain Road, Princeton, Massachusetts, 01541, United States

The state reservation is open year round and hiking is free, with parking fees at some lots. THE PAVED SUMMIT ROAD IS SEASONAL — generally late spring into autumn, closed in winter and in bad weather, and gated at a posted time each evening. The summit car park is small and fills on autumn weekends. The ski area on the northern face is a separate commercial operation with its own season, hours and ticketing.
