Wadden Sea and the East Frisian Islands

UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Wadden Sea (2009), Shared With Denmark And The Netherlands; The World'S Largest Unbroken System Of Intertidal Sand And Mud Flats, With Guided Mudflat Walking And Seven Car Free Or Near Car Free Islands · Norden, Lower Saxony

The Wadden Sea is the band of intertidal sand and mud flats running from the Netherlands along the German North Sea coast into Denmark - the largest unbroken system of its kind in the world, and a single UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by three countries, inscribed in 2009 and extended since. This row is the Lower Saxon third of it, with the seven inhabited East Frisian islands off the coast: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. It is not scenery in the ordinary sense. Twice a day the sea withdraws for kilometres and leaves a flat shining plain of worm casts, shells and draining channels, and the way to understand it is a guided mudflat walk at low water. The islands are quiet, mostly car-free, built around dunes, hooded beach chairs and bicycles, and reached by ferries whose departure times follow the tide rather than the clock. It suits birdwatchers, families with small children and anyone who wants wind and horizon. If you want cliffs and drama, go to Heligoland or Jasmund instead - this is a landscape of almost nothing, which is the point.

The Lower Saxon Wadden Sea from Norddeich and Wilhelmshaven out to Norderney, Juist, Langeoog, Baltrum, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge, Norden, Lower Saxony, Germany

The flats, beaches and dykes are open all year and free; the national park has no gate and no closing time, only zones you may not enter. Guided mudflat walks run roughly March to October and are timed to low water, so a walk may start at six in the morning one week and mid-afternoon the next - the tide table, not a timetable, sets the hour. Ferries run all year but their departures shift daily with the tide, and services to Juist and Baltrum in particular are strictly tidal; always check the month's sailing list before booking beds. Seal-watching boats, island railways and most beach services run roughly Easter to October. Visitor centres normally open daily in season and on reduced days in winter - confirm.
