Wadden Sea National Park and Romo
UNESCO World Heritage Site (2014, The Danish Part Of The Wadden Sea): Tidal Flats Famous For Starling Murmurations, Seals And Oysters, With The Vast Drive On Beach Of Romo · Romo, Region of Southern Denmark
The Wadden Sea is the shallow tidal sea that runs along the coast of the Netherlands, Germany and south-west Denmark, and the Danish stretch became a national park in 2010 and part of a shared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Twice a day the tide drains away to expose huge grey mudflats and sandbanks that feed millions of migrating birds. Its best-known spectacle is the black sun: in spring and autumn, vast flocks of starlings swirl above the marsh at dusk before dropping into the reeds. Seals haul out on the sandbanks, and in the colder months guides lead oyster walks across the flats. Romo, the largest Danish Wadden Sea island, is reached by a causeway and is known for a beach so wide you can drive onto it, plus sea captains' houses and a ferry to Sylt in Germany. Mando is reached only at low tide by a tractor bus, and Fano by a short ferry from Esbjerg. The honest caveat: the flats are flat, grey and windy, the black sun is never guaranteed, and the tidal flats are dangerous - wander out alone and the tide or fog can cut you off.
Wadden Sea coast from Romo and Mando to Esbjerg and Fano, Romo, Region of Southern Denmark, Denmark
The national park, the beaches and the Romo causeway are open all day, every day, year round, with no gate or ticket. What sets your timetable is the tide, the season and the light: guided oyster walks, seal tours, black sun tours and the Mando tractor bus run on fixed departures that follow the tide tables and change day by day, so book ahead. The Wadden Sea Centre at Vester Vedsted near Ribe is usually open daily in the main season and with shorter hours and closed days in winter - check the current schedule. Romo is reached by car on the causeway from Skaerbaek, or by bus from Skaerbaek station; Fano by frequent ferry from Esbjerg.
