The Best Yemeni Honey Is Made Here. Reached By A Long Road From Mukalla Through Hadramaut, A Region Outside The Northern Authorities But Not Free Of Risk · Hajarayn, Hadramaut

Wadi Doan is a deep side valley that runs into Wadi Hadramaut in the east of Yemen, about 100 km inland from the port of Mukalla. Its limestone walls drop several hundred metres to a floor of date palms and small fields, and mud-brick houses stand on ledges so high up the cliff that they seem to hang from it. The valley is best known for Doani honey, made from sidr tree flowers and often counted among the finest honeys in the world; beekeepers still move hives along the valley with the blossom. Villages include Al Hajarayn, an old mud-brick settlement above the valley mouth, Khaylah and Hayd al-Jazil, each with towers and a mosque. Hadramaut is a region of traders and builders, and the mud-brick style here is the same one that made Shibam famous. The road from Mukalla climbs a high plateau and then drops into the wadi, and it has often been slow. Most governments advise against all travel to Yemen, and access to this valley is unknown and changing.

There are no opening hours, because the valley is farmland and village land and not a ticketed site. Looking at the cliffs, palm groves and houses from the road is FREE and possible at any daylight hour. Private houses, mosques and bee yards are CLOSED to visitors unless a family invites you in, and honey sellers keep their own hours, usually mornings and late afternoons. Shops are quiet or CLOSED on Friday and in the heat of early afternoon. Honey, a guide and a driver are paid for. Confirm current access with your government and a local contact before planning anything.
