Waikīkī

Beach · Honolulu, Hawaii

A neighbourhood of Honolulu on the south shore of Oahu and the beach that carries its name - two miles of sand under Diamond Head that is, for a large share of the world, the picture of Hawaii. It is a dense resort district of hotels, shops and restaurants fronting gentle reef-protected water where surfing was taught to the world. It is crowded, commercial and entirely unlike the rest of the state, and it is where most first visits to Hawaii happen.

Kalākaua Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96815, United States

The beach is open at all times and is FREE, and every beach in Hawaii is public to the high-water line no matter which hotel stands behind it. Lifeguards work posted daylight hours at the towers. ⚠ THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PRIVATE BEACH IN HAWAII - if you can reach the sand you are entitled to be on it, and public rights-of-way run between the hotels. Shops and restaurants keep their own late hours; this is a district that runs into the night.
