Waimea Canyon State Park
State Park · Waimea, Hawaii
A canyon roughly ten miles long and up to three thousand feet deep on the west side of Kauai, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Waimea means reddish water in Hawaiian, a reference to the erosion of the canyon's red soil. It was cut by the Waimea River draining the extreme rainfall on Mount Waiʻaleʻale at the island's centre - among the wettest places on earth - and the road along its rim is one of the great drives in the islands.
