Waitomo Glowworm Caves sit in a limestone cave system in the Waikato, about two hours south of Auckland and an hour south of Hamilton, where thousands of bioluminescent fungus gnat larvae - Arachnocampa luminosa, found only in New Zealand - light the ceiling of the Glowworm Grotto with a soft blue-green glow. Local Maori chief Tane Tinorau and English surveyor Fred Mace first explored the caves by raft in 1887, and the land remains Maori-owned today. The standard tour floats a small boat through near-total silence and darkness beneath the glowworm ceiling, a strange, memorable fifteen minutes needing no fitness or nerve. Limestone formations - stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone - fill the wider cave system, and two nearby show caves, Ruakuri and Aranui, add dry walking tours through formations without the glowworms. For a rougher version of the same landscape, black-water rafting and abseiling trips drop visitors into undeveloped caves nearby, floating on inner tubes through total darkness - a different, far more physical experience from the easy boat tour most expect.

The Glowworm Caves run guided tours on a fixed timetable, typically 9am to 5pm daily with departures roughly every 30 to 45 minutes, extended later in the January-February peak summer season. Ruakuri and Aranui Caves keep similar daytime hours. Black-water rafting and abseiling trips run fixed guided departure times booked separately and are not a walk-up option. The caves close only for Christmas Day and in rare cases for maintenance or flooding after heavy rain - call ahead if the weather has been severe.
