Wall Drug
Promenade · Wall, South Dakota
A drug store in a town of about seven hundred people that became one of the most famous roadside stops in America by giving away ice water. Ted and Dorothy Hustead bought it in 1931, nearly went broke, and in 1936 Dorothy suggested advertising free ice water to motorists crossing the hot plains toward the Badlands. The signs went up, the cars stopped, and they never stopped. It now fills most of a block and takes around two million visitors a year.
