Wall Street and the Financial District
Historic District · New York, New York
The southern tip of Manhattan, where the Dutch built a defensive wall in 1653 that gave the street its name and where the American financial system was assembled over the following two centuries. ⚠ IT IS THE ONLY PART OF MANHATTAN THAT STILL HAS ITS SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY STREET PLAN — the lanes bend and narrow because they were laid out for New Amsterdam, not for a grid, and the skyscrapers were fitted around them.
Wall Street at Broad Street, New York, New York, 10005, United States
An open district — free, no gate, no hours. ⚠ IT IS A WORKING FINANCIAL CENTRE MONDAY TO FRIDAY AND EMPTIES ALMOST COMPLETELY AT WEEKENDS, when many restaurants and lunch places close entirely — Stone Street is the exception. ⚠ THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE HAS BEEN CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC SINCE 2001 and there is no tour at any price. Federal Hall, Trinity Church, St Paul's Chapel, the African Burial Ground and the NMAI Heye Center are all FREE and keep their own hours.
