Walla Walla Valley Wine Region
Wine Region · Walla Walla, Washington
Southeast Washington's best-known wine region, an AVA approved in 1984 that spans the state line into Oregon and now holds well over a hundred producers around a small nineteenth-century town. It is unusual among American wine regions in that most of the tasting happens downtown rather than at the vineyards - dozens of rooms occupy former shopfronts within a few blocks, which makes it walkable in a way Napa and Sonoma are not. The grapes are largely grown out on the valley floor and up on the Oregon side.

Tasting rooms generally run 11 AM to 5 PM, with downtown Walla Walla rooms open daily and rural estate wineries often only Thursday to Sunday or by appointment. Many close on Mondays and Tuesdays year round. Harvest, from late August to October, is the busiest period and some producers close their doors entirely to visitors while they crush.
