Walled City of Lahore

Historic Mughal Era Walled City Managed By The Walled City Of Lahore Authority; Wazir Khan Mosque And Shahi Hammam Restored With The Aga Khan Trust For Culture · Lahore, Punjab

The Walled City of Lahore, Androon Shehar, is the old heart of the city that Mughal emperors made their capital: a knot of lanes, bazaars, havelis and mosques inside the line of the vanished walls, entered through the surviving gates. It is one of the most intensely lived-in old towns in Asia, and that is its point. The route most visitors take is the Shahi Guzargah, the royal road from Delhi Gate to the fort. Just inside the gate is the Shahi Hammam, a seventeenth-century bathhouse restored with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and a few minutes on is the Wazir Khan Mosque of 1641, whose walls are covered in some of the finest glazed tile work of the Mughal age. Beyond it the lane becomes Kashmiri Bazaar and Sunehri Masjid, the Golden Mosque, then Dabbi Bazaar and the wholesale markets before it spills out below the fort. The Walled City of Lahore Authority has restored facades and buried the wiring along the royal road, but step one lane off it and the city is as crowded, loud and alive as it has been for centuries. Come on foot, early, and eat as you go.
