Wallowa Lake Tramway

Viewpoint · Joseph, Oregon

A gondola lift from the floor of the Wallowa Valley to the summit of Mount Howard at 8,150 feet, climbing 3,700 vertical feet in about fifteen minutes on what is said to be the steepest vertical lift in North America. At the top there are a few miles of easy trail round the summit, a lodge serving food, and a view across the Eagle Cap Wilderness, into Idaho over Hells Canyon, and north over the Wallowa Valley. It is the only way to reach alpine country here without a hard day on foot.

59919 Wallowa Lake Highway, Joseph, Oregon, 97846, United States

⚠ STRICTLY SEASONAL - the tramway runs roughly late June to early October and does not operate in winter, when the valley largely closes. It runs daily in season, generally from mid-morning to late afternoon, and ⚠ THE LAST DOWNHILL RIDE IS EARLIER THAN MOST VISITORS EXPECT - check it on arrival. ⚠ THE LIFT CLOSES AT SHORT NOTICE IN HIGH WIND AND LIGHTNING, sometimes while visitors are at the summit. A moderate to high per-person fare applies; parking at the base is free. Allow at least two hours at the top.
