Wallowa-Whitman National Forest

National Forest · Baker City, Oregon

About 2.3 million acres in the north-eastern corner of Oregon, taking in the Wallowa Mountains, the Elkhorn Range and most of the Oregon side of Hells Canyon. The Wallowas are granite and glacial and look nothing like the volcanic Cascades - locally they are called the Alps of Oregon, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness at their heart is the largest wilderness area in the state. This is the emptiest corner of Oregon and the drive to it is long from anywhere.

1550 Dewey Avenue, Baker City, Oregon, 97814, United States

FREE and open 24 hours a day, year round across about 2.3 million acres, but ⚠ MOST OF THE HIGH COUNTRY IS UNREACHABLE FOR OVER HALF THE YEAR - the Elkhorn Drive, the Hells Canyon Overlook road and most Eagle Cap trailhead approaches are snowed in from roughly November to June. Self-issued wilderness permits are required for the Eagle Cap, free at trailheads. Campgrounds are seasonal and reservable. Dispersed camping is free across much of the forest. There is no mobile signal across most of the area and the nearest full services are in Joseph, Enterprise and Baker City.
