Walnut Canyon National Monument
National Monument · Flagstaff, Arizona
A 400-foot-deep limestone canyon just east of Flagstaff where Sinagua people built cliff dwellings into ledges along the walls between about 1100 and 1250 CE. The Island Trail loops around a promontory in the middle of the canyon, passing about two dozen rooms close enough to step into, but it drops about 185 feet by hundreds of stairs at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet. The level Rim Trail gives views over the canyon and a reconstructed pithouse. It was proclaimed a national monument in 1915 after looting damaged the sites. The visitor centre sits on the rim, with a large window looking straight into the canyon and its dwellings.
