Walnut Street Bridge

National Register Of Historic Places · Chattanooga, Tennessee

A 1891 iron truss bridge across the Tennessee River at Chattanooga, closed to traffic in 1978, condemned, and then rebuilt as a pedestrian crossing in 1993 rather than demolished — which turned out to be the decision that stitched the city back together. At well over two thousand feet it is among the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, it is free, it is open at all hours, and it carries walkers between the downtown riverfront and the North Shore.
