Walt Whitman House
National Historic Landmark · Camden, New Jersey
A small two-storey row house on a hard street in Camden, and THE ONLY HOME WALT WHITMAN EVER OWNED. He bought it in 1884 at the age of sixty-four with money from Leaves of Grass, lived in it until he died in the upstairs bedroom in March 1892, and received Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker and a stream of pilgrims in the front parlour. Much of what is in it is his — the bed, the rocking chair, his letters, the death notice. IT IS A NEW JERSEY STATE HISTORIC SITE, it is free or nearly so, IT KEEPS VERY LIMITED HOURS, and it is one of the most affecting literary houses in America.
328 Mickle Boulevard, Camden, New Jersey, 08103, United States
FREE or a nominal donation — a New Jersey state historic site. THE HOURS ARE VERY LIMITED: open only a few days a week, generally Wednesday to Saturday and sometimes fewer, in a short daytime window, with state holiday closures and occasional staffing closures on top. RING ON THE DAY YOU TRAVEL rather than checking a website in advance; this is by far the most common reason visits fail. It has also closed for extended restoration periods. Shown by a site interpreter with no self-guided option and no audio guide, taking about 45 minutes. Whitman's tomb at Harleigh Cemetery, a couple of miles away, is free and keeps its own hours. Metered street parking.
