Walter Anderson Museum of Art

Art Museum · Ocean Springs, Mississippi

A museum in Ocean Springs devoted to Walter Inglis Anderson, who rowed a small boat twelve miles out to Horn Island through the 1950s and 60s to draw and paint what lived there, slept under the upturned hull, and rode out at least one hurricane tied to a tree. He worked in obscurity, was institutionalised for periods, and died in 1965. When his family opened the small cottage he had kept locked, they found every wall, the ceiling and the door covered in a mural of the cycle of a day. That room was cut out and moved, and it is now the centre of this museum.
