Wang Family Compound
National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit; The Largest Surviving Qing Merchant Residence In Shanxi · Jinzhong, Shanxi
A fortified merchant house the size of a small town, built into a hillside in Lingshi county by a family who started selling bean curd in the fourteenth century and ended up among the great trading and banking clans of Shanxi. What survives is two walled complexes, Gaojiaya and Hongmenbao, holding well over a hundred courtyards and a thousand rooms across roughly forty-five thousand square metres - larger in floor area than the surviving parts of many imperial palaces, which is why it is sometimes called the folk Forbidden City. It is built as defence as much as residence: outer walls with battlements, gatehouses that can be sealed, and lanes that turn back on themselves. The pleasure of it is the carving. Nearly every beam, brick, screen wall and stone plinth is worked - deer, cranes, lions, whole scenes from opera - and the detail runs for hours without repeating. The family declined with the Qing, and the compound passed to the state; it now sits half an hour from Pingyao and takes as long to walk as the walled city does.
