Warren Dunes State Park
Michigan State Park · Sawyer, Michigan
Warren Dunes State Park is a Michigan state park near Sawyer in the southwest corner of the state, covering about 1,900 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Its signature is Tower Hill, a tall dune of about 240 feet beside the main beach, with a steep sand climb and a quick run back down. Beyond it are forested dunes, a long public beach, a campground and a few miles of trails. It is popular with day-trippers from Chicago, about 1.5 hours away, so summer weekends are crowded and the parking lots fill by late morning. It suits families, hikers and swimmers, but Lake Michigan at this shore has strong rip currents and drownings happen. Check flag signs, watch children closely at all times near the water and do not assume lifeguards are on duty. Allow half a day. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicles, so confirm the current price and rules before you drive down there.

Michigan state parks are generally open daily from early morning to late evening, commonly about 8 AM to 10 PM, with the park open year-round. Winter access is limited, with some roads and facilities closed, and conditions on the dunes can be icy or snow-covered. Beach lifeguards, if provided, are seasonal and may not be on duty every day, so never assume there are lifeguards present. The campground has its own reservation season, and modern campsites commonly operate in the warmer months with limited winter camping. A Recreation Passport is required for a vehicle entering the park. Confirm current hours, beach conditions, lifeguard status and campground dates with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources before you drive.
