Washington Crossing State Park

National Historic Landmark · Titusville, New Jersey

The New Jersey bank where Washington's army came ashore on the night of 25 December 1776, in a sleet storm, after crossing an ice-choked Delaware in Durham boats — and then marched nine miles to Trenton and won. THE CROSSING IS THE MOST FAMOUS SINGLE NIGHT OF THE REVOLUTION and it had been a desperate gamble by a beaten army whose enlistments expired in six days. The JOHNSON FERRY HOUSE, standing at the landing since about 1740, is where Washington and his officers sheltered. PENNSYLVANIA HAS THE DEPARTURE SIDE AS ITS OWN PARK; this is the arrival, and the two are joined by a bridge.

355 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Titusville, New Jersey, 08560, United States

The park and grounds are FREE and open dawn to dusk year round, with a modest per-vehicle day-use fee charged in season at some New Jersey state parks — check the current arrangement. THE VISITOR CENTER MUSEUM AND THE JOHNSON FERRY HOUSE CHARGE SMALL SEPARATE ADMISSIONS OR DONATIONS AND KEEP LIMITED HOURS, CLOSING ON SOME WEEKDAYS — they are the interpretation, so check before travelling. THE CHRISTMAS DAY CROSSING REENACTMENT IS FREE AND UNTICKETED, extremely popular, with parking filling hours ahead, and IT IS WEATHER-DEPENDENT: if the river is too high, fast or icy the boats do not launch. Pennsylvania's Washington Crossing Historic Park, the departure side, is across the bridge and keeps its own hours.
