Washington Island
Island · Washington Island, Wisconsin
An island of about thirty-five square miles off the tip of the Door Peninsula, reached by car ferry across the strait the French called Porte des Morts — Death's Door — for the ships it took. Icelandic settlers arrived in the 1870s and it is generally described as the oldest Icelandic community in the United States, which still shows in the place names and the stave church built in the 1990s. It is quieter and emptier than the peninsula behind it, and it is the jumping-off point for Rock Island, where no vehicles are allowed at all.
