Washington State History Museum
History Museum · Tacoma, Washington
The state's history museum, opened in 1996 in a building whose brick arches deliberately echo the 1911 Union Station next door. It runs the story of Washington from the Coast Salish and Plateau peoples through the fur trade, the railroads, Japanese American incarceration, Boeing and Hanford, and it is unusually willing to sit with the uncomfortable parts. The permanent Great Hall of Washington History is theatrical in a way state history museums often are not, with walk-through settings rather than case after case.
