Washoe Meadows State Park

State Park · South Lake Tahoe, California

Washoe Meadows State Park lies at the south end of Lake Tahoe, in the Lake Valley area of South Lake Tahoe near Meyers, along the Upper Truckee River. It is a quiet meadow-and-forest park of grass, pine and river wetland, undeveloped, with no campground, no visitor centre and no formal entrance, and informal trails used by locals - confirm the trail system and parking. The Upper Truckee River bends through the meadow and the surrounding area is a wetland that has been part of restoration planning - confirm current works. At over 6,000 feet, summer is mild and mosquito-heavy, autumn is crisp and winter brings deep snow suited to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing - confirm conditions. Black bears are common. It suits locals, walkers, cyclists and skiers looking for quiet, and it is a poor pick for a first-time visitor wanting beaches, views or facilities. Lake Tahoe itself is a separate place.

The park is a day-use area, open from around sunrise to sunset, with no staffed gate, no visitor centre and no fee station that we know of - confirm with California State Parks. Access is free, with parking on road shoulders rather than in a lot, and that arrangement can change if works or signs are added. Spring snowmelt can flood the meadow trails and produce heavy mosquitoes, while winter snow covers the paths for skiers and snowshoers. River restoration works may close areas for periods, and summer fire danger can bring restrictions. Check the State Parks page and local signs on the day you go.
