Wat Saman Rattanaram
Riverside Temple On The Bang Pakong Known For Its Giant Reclining Pink Ganesha · Chachoengsao, Chachoengsao
Wat Saman Rattanaram is a Buddhist temple on the Bang Pakong river outside the town of Chachoengsao, east of Bangkok, and it is famous across Thailand for one thing: a giant, bright pink statue of the Hindu god Ganesha lying on his side, head propped on one hand, in a relaxed reclining pose. Ganesha, the elephant-headed remover of obstacles, is worshipped by many Thai Buddhists for success in business, study, the arts and love, and the temple draws steady crowds of devotees who bring marigolds, sweets and fruit. Around the statue stand figures of mice, Ganesha's mount, and the custom is to whisper a wish into a mouse's ear so that it carries the message to the god. The riverside grounds add a pier where people feed fish, stalls of offerings and snacks, and a busy, colourful mix of Hindu and Buddhist images. Combine it with Wat Sothon Wararam, home of the revered Luang Pho Sothon Buddha, and the old Ban Mai market in town for an easy day trip from Bangkok by train or road.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the grounds of Wat Saman Rattanaram are open daily from early morning, around 7 or 8 am, to early evening, around 5 or 6 pm, with no weekly closing day known, and stalls keep roughly the same hours; Wat Sothon Wararam's great hall keeps similar daytime hours. Ban Mai market is busiest on weekends and many shops are closed on weekdays. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at midday on a weekend into car-park queues and heat, taking a one-way taxi out to Wat Saman with no ride back, following advice to use the Airport Rail Link, which does not reach Chachoengsao, missing the last convenient train to Bangkok in the late afternoon, and planning Ban Mai for a weekday when it is shuttered. Confirm current times before relying on them.
