Waterplace Park and the Providence Riverwalk
Public Square · Providence, Rhode Island
A tidal basin and amphitheatre at the head of the Woonasquatucket River in downtown Providence, joined to about three quarters of a mile of cobbled riverside walkway crossed by Venetian-style bridges. It exists because the city uncovered rivers that had been paved over and moved them, which is one of the more successful pieces of American urban repair. It is also the setting for WaterFire, the installation of braziers lit on the water through the warmer months, and on a lighting night it is the busiest place in Rhode Island.
Memorial Boulevard, Providence, Rhode Island, 02903, United States
THE PARK AND THE RIVERWALK ARE FREE and open at all hours, year round. ⚠ WATERFIRE IS AN EVENT ON A PUBLISHED CALENDAR, NOT A PERMANENT INSTALLATION — braziers are lit on the river at sunset on scheduled nights through the warmer months, usually as full or partial lightings, and it does not run every weekend and never in winter. CHECK THE SCHEDULE BEFORE BUILDING A TRIP AROUND IT; arriving on an unscheduled night and finding an empty basin is the most common disappointment here. WaterFire is FREE TO ATTEND. Lighting times shift through the season with sunset, so check the published start. Riverside restaurants fill completely on lighting nights and want reservations well ahead, and downtown paid garages fill early.
